Have You Heard? – (49) Parquet Courts
You know, you occasionally come upon a band and think, why haven’t I heard them before? I had that feeling this weekend with Parquet Courts, a New York indie band. Their first album, “Light Up Gold” came out in 2013. Where … Continue reading
Have You Heard? – (48) Lenny Kravitz
I’ve just been writing about Lenny Kravitz for my book on music. His early days. A retro sixties sound but fresh and individual. I first heard him when I was living in Paris in 1989-90 on a fantastic radio station … Continue reading

Have You Heard? – (47) Lindi Ortega
Well have you? I hadn’t until November last year when I read a review of her latest album, “Tin Star”, in the Guardian, by Michael Hann, a music journalist whose views I respect. He gave it four stars and made … Continue reading

Have You Heard? – (46) Jimi Hendrix playing “The Star Spangled Banner”
I’ve just been watching an excellent BBC documentary on Jimi Hendrix, part of the “Imagine” cultural series. As ever, when you watch anything about Hendrix, you are reminded what an extraordinary guitarist he was. No, not just extraordinary… revolutionary. He … Continue reading

Have You Heard? (45) “Too Blind To See It” by Kym Sims
1991 dance classic. Brings back great memories for me of doing the Christmas disco at my place of work at the time. A House beat and a soulful pop sensibility. Utterly danceable. One of the very best dance records of … Continue reading
Have You Heard? – (44) “You Said Something” by PJ Harvey
I put on “Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea” by PJ Harvey on my iPod this morning, on the way to work. It’s a brilliant album, and it won the Mercury Music prize in 2000. There are many … Continue reading
Have You Heard? (44) – “The Bones Of What You Believe” by CHVRCHES
If Disclosure’s “Settle” was the best dance album I have heard in ages, then CHVRCHES’ “The Bones Of What You Believe” has to be the same for indie. It’s a brilliant, shiny pop confection, the sounds rooted firmly in the … Continue reading

Have You Heard? (43) Dizzee Rascal vs Nirvana
I was reminded today how much I loved this when I first saw it on Jules Holland’s Yew Year’s Eve Show a couple of years ago. Dizzee’s own rap, “Stand Up Tall”, combined with Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Awesome!

Have You Heard? – (42) “Papua New Guinea” by The Future Sound Of London
An ambient-techno-rave classic from 1991. One of my favourites from the era. I’ve been listening to FSOL as I write about all the brilliant electro-dance music in the early 1990s. “Papua New Guinea” is just about the best. This is … Continue reading

Have You Heard? – (41) “Venus As A Boy” by Corinne Bailey Rae… and Bjork
Corinne Bailey Rae is a soulful, jazzy singer songwriter who first came to my attention when she released her eponymous debut album in 2006. It was a mellow delight. At some point afterwards she made this cover version of Bjork’s … Continue reading
