Have You Heard? (44) – “The Bones Of What You Believe” by CHVRCHES
If Disclosure’s “Settle” was the best dance album I have heard in ages, then CHVRCHES’ “The Bones Of What You Believe” has to be the same for indie. It’s a brilliant, shiny pop confection, the sounds rooted firmly in the … Continue reading

My Top Ten – Manic Street Preachers
Haven’t done a top ten for a while. Apologies dear reader, but they take quite a lot of effort, uploading tracks, photos ‘n’all. But here’s a good one to get things going again. The Manic Street Preachers aren’t a band … Continue reading

Have You Heard? (43) Dizzee Rascal vs Nirvana
I was reminded today how much I loved this when I first saw it on Jules Holland’s Yew Year’s Eve Show a couple of years ago. Dizzee’s own rap, “Stand Up Tall”, combined with Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Awesome!

Have You Heard? – (42) “Papua New Guinea” by The Future Sound Of London
An ambient-techno-rave classic from 1991. One of my favourites from the era. I’ve been listening to FSOL as I write about all the brilliant electro-dance music in the early 1990s. “Papua New Guinea” is just about the best. This is … Continue reading

Have You Heard? – (41) “Venus As A Boy” by Corinne Bailey Rae… and Bjork
Corinne Bailey Rae is a soulful, jazzy singer songwriter who first came to my attention when she released her eponymous debut album in 2006. It was a mellow delight. At some point afterwards she made this cover version of Bjork’s … Continue reading
The next best thing to Prince?
A few of us went to the Jazz Cafe tonight to see a tribute to Prince. We didn’t know what to expect in terms of who was playing, but felt that the quality you get at the Jazz Cafe plus … Continue reading

Dadrock and Dads rock!
I’m writing a chapter on Britpop for my music book at the moment. And great fun it is too, remembering the escapades of Oasis, Blur, Pulp and all the rest, with Paul Weller, ex of The Jam and The Style Council … Continue reading

Have You Heard? – (40) ‘Leap Of Faith” by Bluey
Just back from two gloriously sunny weeks on the Algarve, Portugal. Stayed in a lovely villa just outside Lagos, to the west of the region. Still in the summer mood, how about a bit of breezy-jazz-soul-funk? Got back home about … Continue reading

Latitude Festival – my second – July 2013
I’m sitting down to write this at 6.15 pm on Monday 22 July, back from Latitude this afternoon. I’m cracking open my first beer of the day – feels odd. It’s not Tuborg and it’s not lunch time. The four … Continue reading

The night Bruce played “Darkness on the Edge of Town”.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band played Wembley Stadium on 15 June 2013. I was fortunate enough to be there. Fortunate because it turned out to be the best concert I have ever witnessed. In being so it takes … Continue reading
